“In Japanese, ‘〜が欲しいです’ is used when expressing a desire for something. The particle after the noun is ‘が’.
私はお土産が欲しいです。
I want souvenirs.
“〜がほしい” is not a verb but an adjective. Therefore, its conjugation follows the same pattern as “い-adjectives.” Let’s take a look at the negative form.
私はコーヒーが欲しくないです。
I don’t want coffee
In the sentence above, “くない” is added instead of “い” to create the negative form of “欲しい.”
コーヒーが欲しい 。→ コーヒーが欲しくない。
Did you notice that this is the same as the conjugation of “い adjective” that you learned in lesson 4?
“In Japanese, ‘〜がほしい’ is used to express what you want for yourself, while ‘〜をほしがっています’ is used when talking about what someone else wants.” Please note that the particle for the direct object changes from “が” to “を”.
わたし、わたしたち → が欲しいです。
others → を欲しがっています。
- お金が欲しい → 彼はお金を欲しがっています。 (He wants money)
- 恋人が欲しい → テオさんは恋人を欲しがっています。 (Mr. Teo wants girlfriend.)
- 新しい家が欲しい。 → 私の母は新しい家を欲しがっています。 (My mother wants new house.)
私の友達が横浜のお土産を欲しがっています。
