友人：お土産が欲しいんですか。

さや：はい、私はお土産が欲しいです。

実は私の友達が横浜のお土産を欲しがっています。

Step 3. ぶんぽう Grammar　

〜が欲しいです

「〜が欲しいです。」

“In Japanese, ‘〜が欲しいです’ is used when expressing a desire for something. The particle after the noun is ‘が’.

さや

私はお土産が欲しいです。
I want souvenirs.

「〜が欲しくないです。」

“〜がほしい” is not a verb but an adjective. Therefore, its conjugation follows the same pattern as “い-adjectives.” Let’s take a look at the negative form.

テオ

私はコーヒーが欲しくないです。
I don’t want coffee

In the sentence above, “くない” is added instead of “い” to create the negative form of “欲しい.”

コーヒーが欲しい。→ コーヒーが欲しくない。

Did you notice that this is the same as the conjugation of “い adjective” that you learned in lesson 4?

「〜を欲しがっています。」

“In Japanese, ‘〜がほしい’ is used to express what you want for yourself, while ‘〜をほしがっています’ is used when talking about what someone else wants.” Please note that the particle for the direct object changes from “が” to “を”.

わたし、わたしたち　→　が欲しいです。

お金が欲しい → 彼はお金を欲しがっています。 (He wants money)
恋人が欲しい → テオさんは恋人を欲しがっています。 (Mr. Teo wants girlfriend.)
